Salesforce vs Teeo

How to delete stages from my pipeline

Deleting pipeline stages in Salesforce requires administrator access, first verifying that no active opportunities exist in that stage and reassigning them if there are any. Salesforce does not allow deleting a picklist value that is in use. The process takes about 30 minutes. In Teeo, you tell the assistant which stage to delete and it handles the reassignment automatically.

How to delete stages from my pipeline in Salesforce: step by step

Requirements

  • ·Salesforce does not allow deleting a Stage picklist value that is currently in use by any Opportunity record. You must first move all records to another stage, or the system will prompt you to choose a replacement value before completing the deletion.
  • ·The safer option is 'Deactivate' rather than 'Delete'. Deactivating a value hides it from new dropdowns but keeps historical records with that value intact.
  • ·Requires System Administrator profile or a custom profile with metadata modification permissions.
  1. Verify if there are opportunities in the stage

Before deleting the stage, go to the Opportunities tab and filter by Stage = 'Proposal Sent' (or the name of the stage you're going to delete). If there are records, you will need to move them before proceeding with the deletion.

  2. Reassign existing opportunities (if any)

Select all opportunities in that stage using the global checkbox, click 'Mass Update', or edit them one by one and change the Stage field to another valid stage (for example: 'Qualification' or 'Proposal in Progress').

  3. Access Setup

Click the gear icon (⚙) in the upper right corner and select 'Setup'. You need the System Administrator profile to continue.

  4. Go to Object Manager

In the Setup top navigation bar, click the 'Object Manager' tab. Find and select the 'Opportunity' object from the list.

  5. Open Fields & Relationships

In the left sidebar menu of the Opportunity object, click 'Fields & Relationships'. Locate and click the 'Stage' field to open its configuration.

  6. Locate the value to delete

On the Stage field page, scroll down to the 'Values' section. Locate the value you want to delete (e.g., 'Proposal Sent') in the picklist values list.

  7. Select Delete or Deactivate

Click the 'Del' (Delete) or 'Deactivate' link next to the value. If you choose 'Delete' and there are still records with that value, Salesforce will show a warning and ask you to choose a replacement value for the existing records.

  8. Choose the replacement value (if required)

If Salesforce detects records with that stage, a selector will appear to choose the replacement value. Select the stage to which those records should automatically migrate and confirm the action.

  9. Confirm the deletion

Click 'Delete' or 'OK' in the confirmation dialog. Salesforce will delete the picklist value and update all affected records with the chosen replacement value.

  10. Verify the remaining pipeline order

Back in the 'Values' section of the Stage field, click 'Reorder' to review and adjust the order of the remaining stages. Click 'Save' to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to existing opportunities when a pipeline stage is deleted in Salesforce?

If the stage is in use by Opportunity records, Salesforce does not allow deleting it directly. The system will ask you to choose a replacement value and will automatically migrate all affected records to that stage. The safer option is 'Deactivate', which hides the stage from new records without affecting historical ones.

How many steps does it take to delete a pipeline stage in Salesforce?

There are 10 steps: verify opportunities in the stage, reassign them if any exist, access Setup, go to Object Manager, open Fields & Relationships, locate the value in Stage, select Delete or Deactivate, choose a replacement value if applicable, confirm the deletion, and review the remaining order. It takes approximately 30 minutes.

What is the fastest way to delete stages from a pipeline?

With Teeo, you write to the assistant which stage to delete and the system verifies the affected opportunities, shows you which ones need to be reassigned, and completes the deletion. All in one message, without navigating through administration menus.
